Edgar Burgsen, a longtime editor of features, documentaries and television series, died Sunday in Los Angeles of complications from a heart attack. He was 76 years old.
Burgsen won an Emmy Award for editing the pilot for “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles,” as well as an ACE Robert Wise Award. He also won the Golden Calf Award at the Dutch Film Festival.
Born in the Netherlands, Burgsen began his editorial career in Amsterdam. After moving to the United States, he worked as an editor for the anime “Siebert.” He then joined Industrial Light and Magic, where he served as effects editor for “Die Hard 2” and “The Hunt for Red October.” George Lucas selected him to consult on his EditDroid, the predecessor to Avid.
His credits include Jeroen Krabbe’s feature film “Left Luggage,” which competed for the Golden Bear, as well as the Oscar-nominated documentaries “Colors Straight Up,” “Darfur Now,” and “Hollywood.” Bunker” and Kevin Costner’s “500 Nations.” ”
His last editing credit was on Atte de Jong’s upcoming feature “Heart Strings”; variety Steve Gaydos, Senior Vice President of Content;
Burgsen is a former board member of American Cinema Editors and a long-time writer and editor-in-chief of Cinema Editors magazine. He also taught advanced film editing at the San Francisco Art Institute Academy.
An ultramarathon cyclist, he completed 25 centuries.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jana, and two children.
