The Detroit rapper teased his new signing in a song released Tuesday.
Gmac Cash doesn’t like the city’s new welcoming sign.
The buzzing Detroit rapper weighed in on the new “Hollywood-style” billboards along Interstate 94 in a new song released late Tuesday night.
“One thing I have to do is state the facts/This isn’t the sign we wanted, you can take it back,” he raps in the one-minute-plus quick song. . He continued, “All I want to know is, how much did I pay for this? Tell me the truth, dude, I could have built this.”
The sign, which is about 8 feet tall and consists of seven letters and spells out DETROIT, was installed Tuesday along the route from Detroit Metropolitan Airport into the city. It’s part of the city’s effort to welcome people to the NFL Draft, which will be held April 25-27 and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to Detroit.
Gmac Cash, known for creating songs that respond to the topics of the day, wasn’t the only one to criticize the project. Immediate online feedback about the installation was poor, with social media commenters mocking the letter design and a Detroit News Instagram post saying, “I really wonder why they designed this in word art.” “There was also a comment. You’ll soon be tagged by a graffiti artist.
The sign is one of five billboard-style welcome signs to be installed around the city in preparation for the draft, which cost the city $425,000 to create. It was built by the Fairmont Sign Company on the northeast side of the city.
G-Mac Cash, whose songs include celebratory anthems about the Detroit Lions and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, said he’s not taking pictures of the billboards just to be negative.
“We’re just keeping it real, we ain’t hatein’ / I feel like I saw a bigger sign at graduation,” he raps in the song, adding that when the wind gets too strong, the letters disappear I joked about falling.
