As of now, Season 7 Dragon Prince Bringing an end to the animated series’ journey spanning more than six years, the final season is set to air on the 19th. Though the series is expected to continue in other forms, fans are not ready to say goodbye to the animated show and are already running campaigns and theories about what season 8 will be.
Ever since the show’s production team held a panel at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the future of the franchise (more on ComicBook), the demand for Season 8 has really grown.
Below are pictures of the Dragon Prince Saga roadmap created a few years ago, this one at the top and the one below that was revealed at SDCC. It’s basically been expanded, with Season 7 moving into Phase 2 and the new Phase 3 consisting of 3 additional books/chapters. So yes, that means there are plans to conclude the story in Season 8, Season 9, or even Season 10.
Since then, Netflix hasn’t said anything specific about what’s going on, but the recent synopsis update for season 7 includes some words and phrases that suggest the show will definitely end in some way.
“Aaravos has made his big reveal! It’s not too late to catch up with the Dragon Prince before the culmination and climax of Season 7 of this great fantasy saga. As Aaravos and Claudia threaten to destroy the order of the universe and reverse life and death, our heroes must literally be prepared to sacrifice everything they love and believe in to save the world! This season is going to be more thrilling, magical and heartbreaking than ever before.”
We’ve reached out to Netflix to ask for clarification and whether season 7 is indeed the last, but have yet to hear back.
Now, this wouldn’t be a post about what fans want if we didn’t get the fans involved. Earlier this week, we posted asking fans what they love about the show and why they want it to come back for season 8, and we were surprised. We ended up receiving hundreds of messages by email and on social media, and we’re really sorry we can’t feature everyone. We’ve put together a rough rundown of what people want and predict, with some specific fan comments below.
We started with ChickenTDP (definitely one of the biggest fan groups we’ve seen, with a pretty cool merch collection), who gave us the timeline of their involvement with the show, as well as the overview we detailed above. They say they’ve “discovered an amazing community full of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met.” They say we should be able to hear more about the proposed plans for Chapter 3 at NYCC in the coming weeks. “The creators of Dragon Prince will be doing a panel with three “super fans,” including me, and one of the topics they’ll be discussing is Chapter 3. The creators are just as excited for Chapter 3 to be greenlit as we are.”
The majority of fans who reached out shared similar praise for the show in general. They said the animation style, world-building, deep lore, and character complexity are the show’s best assets and why it maintains steady viewership season after season. Others praised the diversity and representation of characters. Many shared stories about how the show helped them personally during difficult times.
Some fans have speculated about the title of Volume 8 and Chapter 3, with some suggesting Light. Others, such as ReelJames, have suggested titles like “Deep Magic” and “Deep.” We’ve also seen a particularly good suggestion from Tyler Boyce, who suggested that the title should be “Mortal.” A few people have even suggested that Arc 3 could be a new spinoff series entirely, titled The Dragon King.
Here are some specific fan theories and requests.
“I would like to see more development of Lux Aurea’s story, a story that tells the present and past of the series. I think it’s the best of the Xadia Kingdoms. If developed in the best way possible, it looks like it has a lot of story to tell. There’s a history entangled with Aaravos and Kimdar (and who knows how many other characters there are). I would like to see more of Janai’s trauma (she saw her sister, who was the city’s Golden Knight, killed, was unable to protect her, and was then betrayed by her brother) shown and developed.” – Vic Yoja (via email)
“In my opinion, the show has already planted the seeds of a lot of interesting lore and conflict that would make for a satisfying third episode without feeling drawn out. The world the show has created is vast and there is a lot to explore, not to mention the characters and dynamics are all very complicated and I’m excited to see how the difficult relationships play out.” – Mak!/tdpmak on X
“I’d love to explore and understand more of the post-Aaravos world. I’d love to dig deeper into the respective cultures and kingdoms of the elves and humans, and see the social and political aftermath of the war as the two races reconcile. Callum and Layla as a couple would be a great narrative vehicle for that. Crafting a love story together between Callum, the crown prince of a human kingdom, and Layla, an elven warrior from Xadia who may be a future princess of that human kingdom, would show the world that elves and humans don’t have to be so separate after all. I think that would be great to explore, especially now that these two are on the brink of adulthood.” – Timeblindjo on X
