While South Korea currently enjoys global influence through K-pop music and television drama series, it also has a long record of untimely deaths of celebrities, performers and musicians. In some cases, the high pressure of training and competing to break through to stardom has been the subject of suspicion. In other instances, both traditional and social media have invaded the private lives of celebrities, and even minor offenses have remained alive in the news cycle for weeks or months.
After “Parasite” star Lee Sun-kyun died by suicide in late 2023, several prominent media figures accused police and media of collusion and called for a reduction in sensational reporting.
