Selena Gomez wanted her character, Mabel, in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” to play a murderer in Season 1 of the hit comedy series.
“That’s what I suggested,” Gomez said in an interview. Variety “I don’t think it’ll work, but who knows,” he said onstage at the Studio, sponsored by J.Crew and SharkNinja, during the Toronto International Film Festival.

Gomez was on hand along with her “Emilia Pérez” co-stars Carla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldana, Edgar Ramirez and Adriana Paz to talk about Oscar buzz and critical acclaim for the Jacques Audiard-directed musical, which won the overall best actress award at Cannes.
The Only Murders in the Building star proved his acting talent and comedic versatility in the mystery drama, co-starring alongside comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Only three other Latina women have been nominated for an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series: Rita Moreno (nominated in 1983 for “9 to 5”), America Ferrera (winner in 2007 for “Ugly Betty” and nominated again in 2008) and Jenna Ortega (last year for “Wednesday”).
Also serving as one of the executive producers of Only Murders, she made history this year as the most-nominated Latina producer in the category’s history, becoming just the third Latina producer to be nominated in the Outstanding Comedy Series category after Salma Hayek for ABC’s Ugly Betty in 2007. The other was Cuban producer Marlis Pujol, who was nominated for two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021 for Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. Additionally, only one Latina woman has ever won as a producer in any of the top series categories (Celia D. Costas for Angels in America in 2004).
Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” will air on Hulu until October 29th.
