The “RoboCop” TV series in development at Amazon is starting to take shape.
Variety Peter Ocko has joined the project as writer, executive producer and showrunner, with James Wan also set to executive produce under his Atomic Monster banner.
The series’ official logline reads, “A massive tech conglomerate teams up with local police to deploy technologically advanced enforcers – half-human, half-machine officers – to combat rising crime.”
In addition to Okko and Wan, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Rob Hackett will executive produce. Daniel Bosone will oversee the Atomic Monster project. The series will be produced by Amazon-MGM Studios.
The RoboCop series has been in the early stages of development since Amazon acquired MGM, as the company looks to leverage its access to MGM’s extensive IP library for both film and TV projects. Amazon is also currently developing a Legally Blonde prequel series, which is also produced by MGM, while the Poltergeist project recently named a showrunner.
The RoboCop series began in 1987 with the first RoboCop film, starring Peter Weller as the half-human, half-machine police officer. Weller reprised the role in the 1990 sequel, and Robert Burke took over the role for RoboCop 3 in 1993. Nancy Allen played Officer Anne Lewis in all three films. A reboot starring Joel Kinnaman was released in 2014. There have also been several RoboCop TV series, including two animated and two live-action, as well as video games and comic books.
Ocko’s writing experience includes a variety of shows, including “Dinosaur,” “Dead Like Me,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Black Sails,” “The Office” and “Lodge 49.” He most recently created the AMC series “Moonhaven.”
Ocoko is repped by Jackoway Austen Tyerman and Management-ment. Wan is repped by CAA, Stacey Testro International and Myman Greenspan Fox.
