Copenhagen-based REinvent International Sales, one of the largest premium series providers in the Nordic region, will be in the spotlight this week at the Cannes Series Festival and MipTV Market.
For the second year in a row, the Sales, Fundraising and Packaging banner has two titles in the competition. One is a Danish drama-thriller that will have its world premiere in the main competition, and the other is a Swedish short drama piece, “Painkiller”. He took a bow at the Gothenburg Film Festival.
“Last year, the Norwegian political drama Power Play won Best Series and the short story category went to the Swedish romantic drama Out of Touch. The Cannes series is a great platform to promote series. ” commented Helen Oro, Director of Sales and Marketing at REinvent.
Looking at this year’s contest nominees, Oro points out that “Dark Horse” and “Painkiller” both deal with relationships between mothers and daughters.
Dark Horse, a Danish drama thriller ordered by TV2, depicts a teenage girl’s attempts to free herself from her controlling mother with deadly consequences. The title role stars Birgitte Hjort Sorensen (Borgen, Pitch Perfect 2) and up-and-comer Josefine Hojbjerg.
“This is a multi-layered story, and at its core is the story of an abusive relationship between a self-centered mother and her daughter. But after the two women travel around the world, “There’s also an interesting culture-clash aspect of coming back to the countryside. We immediately liked the setting and the cast and saw the international potential there,” Oro said.
In a completely different genre, “Painkiller” follows Jana, a strong-willed Balkan mother and cleaning lady, and her daughter, Andrea, a popular artist. The two try to make each other’s lives better, but keep failing. “This is a quirky drama from one of Sweden’s most talented writers and directors, Gabriela Pichler,” director Ørlo said of the SVT series.
Limited release varietytwo fresh pickups will be unveiled to buyers around the world at the MipTV Market in Cannes.
The six-part series “L/over,” commissioned by MTV/C More, is the latest sample of Finnish event drama, combining “very high production values, top-notch talent, and compelling storytelling.” Oro said.
The project is the brainchild of Marika Makarov, producer and founder of leading Finnish-British company Gutsi Animations, known for the Emmy-nominated animated series Moominvalley.
For his first live-action fiction project, Makarov has teamed up with co-creator Nina Honkanen and British writer and actor Frog Stone (“Bucket”). The latter also serves as head writer, sharing a writing room with BAFTA nominee Kevin Rundle (Hollyoaks) and Sophie Switzinbank. Alexi Salmenpera (“White Walls,” “Bad Family”) is concept director.
With a witty title style that combines “over” and “L” for love, this drama-thriller explores how and why abusive control, sometimes mistaken for love, can be the biggest danger in a relationship. We will explore what would happen if “that person” were ourselves. Who can destroy you? ” says the logline.
Star actor Krista Kosonen (The Biphoniers, Blade Runner 2049) plays Lusa, a single mother who falls in love with the charming novelist Juha (Dead Wind, Bullets), but the love story of the century… Eventually, cracks appear in the story. . “My boyfriend is so creepy that the hair on his body stands on end,” says director Auro, who will be showing the trailer at Cannes.
The second new pickup is “Hybris,” a Norwegian young adult short story series from creator/writer duo Karianne Lund (“Occupied,” “State of Happiness”) and Hege Gaarder Nordlie (“Hjerteslag”). Mixing crime and humor, the show tackles gossip and rumors in an innovative way.
Up-and-coming young talent Shah Vatneh Briand (“Power Play,” “Rod Knock”) plays Marius, a popular 19-year-old accused of sexual assault. However, he has no recollection of what happened during his school trip. Was he the one who put a Barbie doll in his classmate’s butt? To clear his name, Marius and his two friends set out to find the truth.
Commissioned by NRK, the program will first air on Norway’s Pubcaster in September, and will next air on Denmark’s DR and Finland’s Yle.
“Although this is a small TV show, there is a market for quality YA content and we strive to offer something for everyone,” Oro said.
The sales veteran also focuses on two completed and highly anticipated Finnish series. One is “Seconds,” a suspense-driven disaster drama produced by Fire Monkey, co-produced by Finnish publisher Yle and Germany’s NDR. and “The Girl Who Dislapsed,” a psychological thriller produced by Reel Media for his MTV/C More.
Mr. Oro commented on market trends as follows: “The market has not fully recovered post-COVID-19, and given the difficult microeconomics, distributors and broadcasters are still fine-tuning their content strategies and purchasing cautiously. The market has recovered since Berlin and we are seeing new energy. We are trying to find more windowing solutions, new ways to create content visibility so that no one loses money. ” she said.
