Disney is making waves with its new Moana 2 conservation campaign, which aims to protect the ocean and support the real-life Moana.
The Mouse House has partnered with National Geographic Pristine Seas and the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) to celebrate the explorer and Moana in all of us and answer the call to protect the oceans together.
An all-new feature that includes footage from Moana 2 explores how the ocean has the power to connect us, benefit us, and inspire happiness and adventure across cultures and coastlines.
Since 2008, Pristine Seas has explored and researched underwater locations around the world, contributing to the creation of 29 marine protected areas covering more than 6.8 million square kilometers. These areas, like marine national parks, benefit both people and the planet.
In partnership with Pristine Seas, the campaign supports the work of teams working to protect our oceans with local communities, indigenous peoples, governments and partners.
In addition, our collaboration with the Polynesian Nautical Society allows for the continued practice of traditional wayfinding as seen in “Moana” and “Moana 2.” Before the invention of compasses, clocks, and GPS, Pacific Islanders navigated the open ocean without instruments, observing stars, the sun, ocean swells, and other natural signs to help determine a ship’s direction and location. I was on a voyage. At sea, it’s like Moana. Over time, these methods have been in danger of being lost to modernization, but a resurgence of the art and science of wayfinding is underway among the Pacific Islands, with this organization leading the way.
Since PVS launched the traditional voyaging canoe Hokule’a nearly 50 years ago, this sacred vessel has become a vehicle for exploring the ocean, the earth, and the natural world. With each voyage, PVS began to recover lost cultural traditions and reveal the vital importance of humanity’s relationship with nature. Hōkūleʻa has sailed nearly 300,000 miles, connecting with indigenous communities, marine scientists, educators, and students around the world. In 2025, PVS will resume the Moananuiakea voyage, and Hōkūleʻa will continue sailing around the Pacific in support of a growing movement to protect our oceans and planet.
This initiative is one of several ways Disney is giving back to the community in honor of Moana 2, a film that aims to bring happiness and a little Disney magic to children and families around the world.
Additionally, it is part of Disney’s long-standing commitment to take meaningful and measurable actions to support a healthier planet for people and wildlife through an initiative called Disney Planet Possible. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has committed more than $125 million to global collaborations to advance conservation efforts and positively impact wildlife and their habitats, including the oceans. . Additionally, grants from the Disney Conservation Fund support community-based programs working to expand the assessment and protection of marine life in more than 40 countries and all five oceans.
