Maria Ann is actually Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former US President and First Lady, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. For his latest film project, “The Heart,” the younger Obama dropped his last name and used his middle name. As her Hollywood career took off, Maria’s pen name was revealed in the Sundance Institute’s “Meet the Artist” spotlight video, where she was introduced as Maria Ann Filmmaker.
The move is speculated to be an attempt to distance himself from Obama’s influential parents, who began his career in the entertainment industry with production company Higher Ground Productions in 2018.

The Heart is Malia’s directorial debut, but the Obama native already has a writing credit as a staff writer on Glover’s Amazon Prime show Swarm.
