One Direction singer Liam Payne had traces of alcohol, cocaine and prescribed antidepressants in his system moments before he fell from a three-storey hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, following his shocking sudden death last month. This was confirmed in the toxicology report.
Payne’s body underwent a complete toxicology test for urine, blood and vitreous humor, a statement released by the State Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office said. His family had already been informed of the findings before they were made public. Initial reports suggested that pink cocaine, a mixture of ketamine and other illegal drugs, was found in his system, but the statement made no mention of that.
Three people were detained in connection with his death, including a hotel employee, a drug dealer and a “friend” who posed as Mr. Payne’s manager. Mr Payne is said to have spent time with Mr Payne before his death on October 16th. The other two are suspected of supplying Payne with drugs that were found in her body after her fall.
After his death, the prosecutor’s office announced that his cause of death was “multiple trauma” and “internal and external bleeding.”
The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear, but authorities said that “a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room that prove the circumstances of his previous alcohol and drug consumption.”
The One Direction member was found in the courtyard of the Casasul Palermo Hotel, and an employee called 911 before the incident. According to phone records, a hotel staff member told emergency services: “We have a guest who is high on drugs and is trashing the room, so we need someone to come.” Another employee called and said Payne’s life may be in danger and said, “He’s in a room with a balcony, and I’m a little worried…”
Payne has been open about her struggles with alcohol and suicidal thoughts, and said she went to rehab just last year to get sober. “I had a lot of time to reminisce about that time,” he said on Logan Paul’s podcast. At the time, he had been sober for nearly six months. “I had to go to get a little better.”
As a member of One Direction, he was one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, selling 70 million records worldwide. After the quintet went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, he embarked on a solo career and released his debut album LP1 in 2019. They released their new single “Teardrops” at the beginning of this year, and are currently preparing their second album.
