On Saturday, Grimes suffered a debilitating equipment failure in front of thousands of fans, and likely millions of fans watching online, which is probably every Coachella performer’s nightmare. The first half of her set seemed fine, but things started to fall apart in the second half. She tried to explain that the problem had to do with the programming of the tracks on the mixing desk, but her frustration was obvious and several times when things went wrong, she yelled into the microphone, I shrieked. But even by the most charitable standards, it was a disaster.
Early Sunday morning, Grimes apologized on X (formerly Twitter) for her performance and her reaction, and promised to improve on her performance at Coachella’s second weekend next Saturday.
We would like to apologize for the technical issues with tonight’s show. I want to come back stronger and usually handle all aspects of my shows myself. This was the first time we outsourced something important, like having someone else do things like her BPM on rekordbox and organizing the tracks on his SD card to save time. I had a bad feeling beforehand that I wasn’t running everything through cdjs, and I reported it, but they didn’t nag me.The big lesson for me was a combination of:
1. If you want it done right, do it yourself.
2 Stay connected even if you feel sick
The three of them would probably be better off pretending to be okay and engaging with the audience rather than spending the entire show slumped over their desks trying to fix the software while trying to be funny.
Next week I will personally organize all my files. We will never let something like this happen again.
I’ve spent months working on this show, creating the music and visuals, and I’m clearly not feeling the best.
But yeah, next week will be perfect, everything will go through my hands.
Some good lessons learned. I wish you all the best in your life. His BPM on the CDJs was about 370 for him, so I couldn’t mix it manually by ear, and his front monitors were off, so I was trying to guess what it would sound like to you guys, and I was literally trying to guess what it would sound like to you. I felt confused.
please forgive me!love, always
She added a comment about her irritated tone in a follow-up tweet.
I wasn’t aware of the screaming, and a few days ago my friend showed me how I was constantly screaming into the microphone and making screeching noises, which added to the psychological confusion, haha. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Hahahahahaha, I’m going to at least put the verb and dist in there if I think about it. Please do that again.
