Explaining the origins of Jade and Obsidian in DC Comics
Jade and Obsidian could not be more different
As the original members of the Justice Society grew older and advanced, they began to have children, some of whom had supernatural powers. Green Lantern Alan Scott had two: Jade and Obsidian. Jade has powers similar to her father’s, but Obsidian taps into Shadowland abilities. Obsidian’s powers are the result of his father’s battle with the dark sorcerer Ian Carkle. They were both members of Infinity Incorporated, a supergroup made up of children of the Society, and Obsidian briefly belonged to the Justice League. Jade became a member of the Green Lantern Corps and dated Kyle Reiner.
Obsidian and Jade reunite as teenagers and try to have a normal brother-sister relationship while accepting that they are the children of one of Earth’s greatest heroes.
Although they are brothers, Jade and Obsidian have vastly different perspectives on life and being a hero. To protect the twins from harm, the children’s mother, Alan Scott, and Harlequin adopted Jade and Obsidian, and the twins grew up without knowing each other. Although Jade enjoyed a life of relative luxury and care, Obsidian’s adopted home proved abusive. Obsidian and Jade reunite as teenagers and try to have a normal brother-sister relationship while accepting that they are the children of one of Earth’s greatest heroes.
The Justice Society is headed for its own civil war.
Will Green Lantern be forced to intervene?
Now that her father and other members of the Justice Society are missing, Jade, Obsidian, and the younger members of the team must find them, but there are significant differences in ideology. Lemire’s “suggestion” in the interview provided an overview of Obsidian and Jade’s perspective, but did not elaborate further. Obsidian wants to bring the group into the “modern world,” which means perhaps taking a more proactive approach, similar to groups like the Authority. This would go against what the Justice Society represents, which Jade wants to preserve. So the question becomes: whether the association can survive the split;

The upcoming schism in the Justice Society, represented by Jade and Obsidian, could spark a new civil war in the future. Even if Obsidian’s ideology wins out and the team embarks on a darker path, the Society’s old guard likely won’t approve.
