Staring down an angry silverback gorilla isn’t something anyone wants to do, but that’s what zookeepers at a Fort Worth zoo do, and the terrifying scene was all filmed by a zoo patron.
The video was a huge hit on TikTok, and it’s easy to see why. Elmo, a 34-year-old male silverback, charged out of the cave-like part of his enclosure and headed straight for one of his handlers.
The employee was able to throw a large tin pot, or bucket, to distract Elmo… when Elmo bolted toward the door. She holds it open for a few seconds and she locks eyes with the giant ape… and they appear to have a silent but tense confrontation.
Adding to the drama is the fact that a second keeper was standing just a few feet away from the gorilla, hiding behind a tree.
This video was shot by a former zoo guard. ben white, according to WFAA. He told the report that the second zoo worker was trying to play a “fun” game of hide-and-seek with Elmo to distract himself from attacking other workers.
The ploy worked, and Elmo eventually calmed down and even picked up the tin pot… apparently trying to give it back to the employee.
White said the video was actually filmed several months ago, but only now has it gone viral on social media.
The Fort Worth Zoo said the two zookeepers didn’t know Elmo was still on the loose when they arrived, but their tactic worked perfectly. There was never any physical contact between Elmo and his keeper…and no one was hurt.
“Keepers work with and train these animals every day, and their knowledge and expertise allows them to calmly navigate the situation and safely exit the zoo,” zoo officials said. ” he said.
