Danish filmmaker Lensu has launched Lensu Music, a label focused on bringing Kashmiri music to a mainstream audience through collaborations with established artists and emerging local talent.
The label aims to showcase regional language songs in Kashmiri, Balti and Pahadi alongside Hindi and English singles. Its roster includes artists such as Noor Mohammad, Huzaif Nazar, Masrat Un Nisa, Abey Sopori and Duha Shah, and ‘Hoshdar’ marks their first original release.
“Music has become an integral part of my filmmaking journey,” says Lenz, who studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, before founding his production company, Lenz Films. “The label focuses on sharing authentic Kashmiri stories and creating a platform for local talent.”
The label has already produced collaborations with notable artists such as Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Ali Sethi and Rashmeet Kaur. In particular, ‘Ae Savere’ featuring Soni Razdan explores themes of Kashmiri Pandit heritage, while ‘Pehla Qadam’ brings together artists from India, Pakistan and the US during the pandemic.
“I am thrilled to be collaborating with legendary Kashmiri folk artist Noor Mohammed under the amazing label Lens Music,” says Rashmeet Kaur. “This marks the historical fusion of the Kashmiri and Punjabi peoples, a beautiful fusion of two rich cultures.”
Actor Yania Bharadwaj, who appeared in the label’s debut film Hoshdar, calls working with Lens “absolutely magical.” “He brought out a gentle, beautiful side of me that I had never seen before,” she says. “It was an unforgettable experience that holds a special place in my heart.”
“Kashmiri music is beautiful and I’m happy that it’s finally getting the platform it deserves,” said Lenz on India’s Oscar-winning “Lost Ladies” star Mohit Chauhan’s “Hum Mile.” Nitanshi Goel, who collaborated with Music, added. “More success stories in this valley should be encouraged. It’s time.”
Upcoming releases include ‘Yusha Inna’ featuring a group of Balti singers from Kargil, ‘Jee Le Zara’ with actor Mir Tafazul and ‘Chinggari’ performed by IP Singh. The label also has projects with Aabha Hanjura and Yashika Sikka.
Produced by Excel Entertainment and inspired by legendary singer Raj Begum, Renz’s new film ‘Songs of Paradise’ is scheduled for release in early 2025. The film stars Saba Azad and showcases Kashmir’s musical heritage.
The label maintains partnerships with leading music companies in India such as Zee Music, Sony Music, Saregama and Times Music, while collaborating with local production teams in Kashmir.
