The creepy Korean drama movie “Exhuma” has remained at the top of the local Box Off Ice chart for six consecutive weeks. We decided not to take on the challenge of major newcomers “Troll Factory” and “Godzilla X Kong: New Empire.”
According to data from Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), “Exhuma,” starring Choi Min-sik, dropped 32% from the previous week to $3.08 million from Friday to Sunday. This means that the show has earned a total of $78.7 million from approximately 11 million viewers.
“Troll Factory,” a crime drama about an investigative journalist who is invited to investigate an online fraud company, but whose informant mysteriously disappears, was the top new movie of the weekend. Directed by Ahn Guk-jin and starring Song Seok-kook (Netflix’s “Killer Paradox”), the box office gross was $2.56 million, good enough for second place from Friday to Sunday. It earned a total of $3.75 million in the first five days.
“Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” opened in third place. It earned $1.8 million from Friday through Sunday, and $2.4 million in its five days of release.
Although the top two new releases didn’t take the top spot, their weekend sales totaled $9.16 million, helping March 2024 outscore March 2023. In the latest month, 11.7 million tickets were sold (up 57% year-on-year), with total revenue reaching 116 billion won ($85.6 million). The market share for local movies in the same month was 72%.
Thanks to a strong March, the first quarter also reached positive territory. Sales from January to March 2024 were 302 billion won ($223 million), an increase of 10% from the previous year. Ticket sales were 30.9 million, an increase of 23% compared to 25.2 million in the first three months of 2023.
In a recent weekend, “Dune 2” placed fourth behind two newcomers. In South Korea, it earned $578,000 in its fifth weekend of release. Its total gross reached $16.3 million, making it the third highest gross of any film released in South Korea this year.
The Japanese animated film “Spy x Family Code: White” came in fifth place with $272,000. After two weekends, the total gross was $1.74 million.
The Korean historical/political drama “1980: An Unforgettable Day” started in sixth place with a weekend box office gross of $141,000, and has collected a total of $217,000 over five full days.
“Wonka” finished the weekend at No. 7, earning $97,000. It was released at the end of January and has grossed $25.2 million in the two months since its release. This number is the second highest among movies released in South Korea this year, after “Exhuma”.
Another Japanese anime, “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom,” reached number 8 on the Korean charts in just its preview screening. The film, which is officially scheduled for release on Wednesday (April 3), grossed $93,800 in its most recent weekend.
Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Evil Does Not Exist” opened in 9th place. It earned $73,400 from Friday to Sunday, and $146,000 in five days of release.
