For the past few days, Netflix has been showing the second installment. level moon The film; overnight, initial reactions from critics and enthusiasts poured in. Let’s take a look at the consensus so far. The second film seems to be a step up from the first.
As a quick reminder, Rebel Moon Part 1 was released in December 2023, ushering in a new fantasy sci-fi universe from Zack Snyder. The film was shot in quick succession with its sequel, and is scheduled to hit screens around the world on Netflix in April, just months after its original release.
What are they saying now that screenings and screeners have been dispatched to the press and enthusiasts, and early public reactions have been made public over the past few hours?
initial positive reaction to Rebel Moon Part 2: Scargiver
Start with something more positive and work your way from there!
Brian David, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, set the tone and sentiment that would resonate among others, stating: Said:
“Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is a huge step up from Part One.
The first hour lays the groundwork for the upcoming battle, but the final hour is truly spectacular.
Sofia Boutella and Zack Snyder work well together and I hope Part 3 happens. ”
Brittany Murphy “Muse of Media” Posted in X:
“I really enjoyed Zack Snyder’s Rebel: The Scargiver. Of course, there was some thrilling action, but the best part was probably the great character work throughout.
Sofia Boutella and Ed Skrein are great and Bae Doona and Djimon Hounsou are scene stealers! ”
Snyder and Rebel Moon superfans were even more outspoken than the critics (perhaps unsurprisingly!). We’ve embedded some of their responses below.
The Scargiver embodies the power of the visual medium to embody the scale and scope of science fiction. This work perfectly reflects all the settings provided in A Child of Fire. This is Zack Snyder at his best, his truest self. pic.twitter.com/i2XYSme4SN

my #level moon review:
I liked it overall. The action sequences were incredible and the emotional moments really packed a punch as well. We cheered, laughed, and shed a few tears. The ending is great and definitely concludes the story, but leaves room for a sequel. And Jimmy too. I love that robot.

Rebel Moon Part 2 is the most intense, hardcore, visceral, bombastic, extreme war movie you’ve ever seen.
Zack Snyder goes into full maximalist mode. There were many cheer-worthy applause moments.
That’s the proof of the critics. Mainstream audiences will love it too. #level moon #Netflix pic.twitter.com/Sb40dDdZ3H— SamuEl⚒️🌙 #StandWithUkraine🇺🇦 #FreeHongKong🇭🇰 (@SamuEl_KentMan) April 6, 2024

mixed reviews of Rebel Moon Part 2: Scargiver
Rama’s screenplay was eventually mixed into the film, stating that the second part ended up feeling shorter, and his full response was:
“REBEL MOON Part 2 was more action-packed than Part 1. However, the dialogue left a lot of room for improvement and the backstory was too depressing. That said, the firepower combat was That’s what I wanted and combat with firepower was what I got. It did its job.”
Rama attended a fan screening in Los Angeles and was able to record a 50-minute Q&A with Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder. The scene is embedded below.
Gizmodo and io9 reporter Germain Lussier had a mixed experience. saying:
“Thankfully, #RebelMoon – Part 2: The Scargiver is better than Part 1. Here, Snyder focuses more on character than world-building, keeping everything contained and focused.
Despite this, it still drags, becomes repetitive, and doesn’t connect emotionally. However, the third act is the rule. ”
Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geekly was the first of the more negative reviews, stating that the sequel did not do enough to move the story forward. saying:
“At the end of Rebel Moon Part 2: Scargiver, it feels like the story hasn’t progressed very much. It’s as if you’re in the same place you were after Part 1, except with a little more body count. I love Zack Snyder’s slow motion scenes, but there are a lot of them! #RebelMoonPart2”
Next week, our own Andrew Morgan will be reviewing the sequel. As a quick reminder, here’s how Morgan summed up the first film in his 2 out of 5 star review:
“‘Rebel Moon – Part 1: Fireborn’ feels redundant and unnecessary for a sci-fi blockbuster with a sequel coming out just a few months later. It’s similar to Star Wars, but it’s a bit different from that world. Lacking charm, fun, and memorable world-building, Snyder seems to be missing out on what makes his influence so memorable. With a largely quality cast, the characters have time and depth. I can’t get over the complete lack of. It’s hard to feel any real enthusiasm for finding out how this story ends this spring.”
Of course, beyond that, we’ll be covering the second movie’s stats in detail after its release, as they’ll no doubt play a big role in Netflix’s decision on whether to continue the Rebel Moon universe in the future. Given the new changes at the top of Netflix’s film division and the performance of the first film, it seems like this one has a high mountain to climb.
