Singer Omar Apollo makes his acting debut as a hustler who has sex with Daniel Craig in Queer, but the James Bond star says he didn’t have to worry about keeping the newcomer on his toes. speak
“Omar is a beautiful human being,” Craig told me recently at a screening of Luca Guadagnino’s film hosted by Barbara Broccoli at CAA. “We just need to look out for each other. That’s it. We’re all adults. We understand what it is and we try to recreate that scene as realistically as possible. ”
The film, based on the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs, stars Craig as an American writer in 1940s Mexico who falls in love with a young expat, played by Outer Banks star Drew Starkey.
You look very dirty in the movie. Your nails are dirty. Have you always wanted to take a shower?
In the 1940s, people didn’t shower very often, maybe once a week. But even though he’s a writer, there aren’t any scenes in the movie where he’s writing, so we also wanted the ink under his fingernails. By putting ink under his fingernails, I wanted to remind him that he is a writer.
I’m in recovery, but I have to say that I felt the drugs and alcohol seeping through the entire movie. There was an almost tricky feeling to it.
I take that as a compliment. I have friends who are junkies, and they were junkies too. I’ve been watching what it does to them and how those things affect them. But we didn’t want this to be a study of addicts. Because I don’t think this is that kind of movie. And also, let’s be honest, Burroughs was an addict all his life until his death. [Burroughs died in 1997 at age 83]. He took it very seriously.
How was your chemistry with Drew?
He is a very beautiful human being. We were lucky that he cast someone in the film who was young, dedicated, and knowledgeable about the world.
Have you ever seen “Outer Banks”?
No, I don’t, but I know he’s a big star. He’s a big star. He has grown up very much. he knows what he’s doing. Just be dedicated. Working with passionate people makes your job so much easier.
“Queer” will be released in theaters on November 27th.
