Some movies exist purely for unashamed enjoyment. After a hard week at work, you call your friends, watch a movie, laugh, and relax. civil war is not one of those movies, but it is a must-see. It’s a disturbing look at how we could all be at our worst.
About the Civil War
British novelist and film director Alex Garland (28 days later, Ex Machina, extinction) will direct the A24-produced action/war film about a divided America, where two large states, California and Texas, unite against the Union under the banner of the Western Forces (WF) . Other states, including Florida, are watching and following suit.
Their goal is to unseat the current president (played by Nick Offerman), whom they consider corrupt and power-hungry, and they intend to use any means necessary to remove him. In this case, “not using any necessary means” is tantamount to using violent force. There is a lot of violence in this movie. Our desensitized selves have seen every form of violence on screen to the point where it’s funny to see someone get shot. civil war Violence is not something to laugh at. It feels real and is the type that confuses and upsets you, as all violence does.
This article is brought to you by a group of journalists who took the opportunity to travel to the nation’s capital, Washington DC, where they plan to interview the president before the city inevitably falls to the WF and a new order begins. .
Appearance civil war Lee Smith, played by Kirsten Dunst, is an experienced war photographer who lives with her colleague Joel (Wagner Moura), her mentor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), and an ambitious and sometimes overzealous young photographer. He takes a dangerous journey to Washington, D.C. with Jesse (Kailie Spaeny). Their journey is filled with all sorts of dangers, discoveries, and moments of reflection amidst the war raging around them.

For some reason, I love war movies and political thrillers. These two genres do not scream peace, love, and happiness. civil war It’s a bit of both. One of the first things that struck me about the director’s creative choices was how he enhanced the soundscape for emotional effect.
First, I liked that the film avoided the large orchestral set pieces common in war movies that deal primarily with American or European patriotic themes. The film’s score is strange and at times makes you feel doped up or tripped. I’ve never been high, but I know in my head this is what it feels like on some level. Creatively, this must have been a choice to emphasize the strange dystopian world Garland is building and to tell us, “This is not what you think.” This is not something you know. This is not the movie you expected. ”
Secondly, this movie uses sound wisely. There’s a lot of gunshots and everything related to military destruction, but none of it is distracting. It’s compelling, disturbing, and helps the story. You feel it every time the gun is fired. As I mentioned earlier, most of us are now all too accustomed to gun violence on screen, but I still heard several loud gasps from other people in the movie theater with me. I was surprised.
In the performance, Dunst perfectly plays a disillusioned but resilient photojournalist who takes on a dangerous mission that could be the pinnacle of his career. She is a reluctant mentor to the character Spaney, and allows us to see the person she once was, full of hopes and dreams.
Two of my favorite performance moments were when Joel, played by Wagner Moura, screams uncontrollably in the middle of a military camp following the death of someone close to him. That cry is not just about that death. In a way, he’s crying out for all of us because he’s seen a lot of things that are hard to digest.
The second is a cameo scene in which Jesse Plemons plays an unknown soldier at the mercy of Lee Smith and his group.I’ve seen Plemons play some pretty mean characters in his career, but these past few minutes… civil war It was movie money.
However, on the downside, some of the dialogue is erratic and I wonder if this is bad writing or if it was written that way on purpose to show how weird and confusing everything is in this world. Sometimes it was difficult to judge. I’m leaning towards the idea that it was badly written, but not so catastrophically bad that it ruined what was working well.
Also, I’m still not sure how I feel about the supreme place of journalism and photography in this film. The photographer characters take pictures of everything, but I can’t help but wonder who it was for, or if there are boundaries we respect. did. Sure, they’re photojournalists and times like this are “peak business” for them, but they also felt very anxious, which was probably the point.

I won’t spend too much time on this because it’s not the point of my review, but some reviews have made a lot of points about Garland’s failure to make his point. civil war. Wired’s review says he played both sides. Given that this film was released during an American election year and everything that has happened in the final days of the Trump presidency, it feels like a disappointment from some quarters.
But I have a different view. I feel like this movie is not just about America. Yes, the story is set in America, and the story is not in the distant future, but in the near future. Still, the film paints a deeply unsettling portrait, more about society than politics, about what we become if we don’t live up to our highest ideals. I don’t think this movie is trying to teach anyone anything or make a point. I think it’s a movie that shows us one of the many paths humans can take if we’re not careful.
The sad thing is that so many people in other parts of the world (even the US’s neighbors) are already living that reality. But if this new generation of young Americans saw this event unfold in familiar territory, they would be shocked. I know I was pretty shaken up while watching it. civil war It’s not something you enjoy, it’s something you feel.
