For nearly 40 years, novelist Bret Easton Ellis has chronicled his tales of noir debauchery in bestselling books such as American Psycho and Less Than Zero. West Hollywood Sheriff’s Sergeant Abraham Bedoyan said his partner, Todd Michael Schultz, was arrested this week at the couple’s luxury Los Angeles condo and charged with robbery.
Sergeant Bedoyan said Tuesday that the manager at 818 North Doheny Drive received a call from a female resident in distress. In a police report read by Sergeant Bedoyan, the resident said a man had broken into her apartment and ransacked her belongings.
The woman reportedly told the management company that the intruder “did not respond” to her requests to leave the apartment.
Building representatives arrived and took the man into custody, who Sergeant Bedoyan identified as Mr. Schultz, 37. Sergeant Bedoyan said there was nothing to suggest Mr Ellis, 59, was involved in any crime.
A witness outside, who requested anonymity because he did not want to be involved in this story or the incident, said a large number of police cars soon arrived. While residents walked around discussing what had happened, Ellis paced the sidewalk, looking distressed, talking on his cell phone.
Ellis said in a text message Friday night that Schultz had “severe mental health issues exacerbated by drugs.” He said the incident was non-violent and that Mr. Schultz was experiencing a psychotic episode and entered the open apartment believing it to be Mr. Ellis’s.
Ellis said Friday’s court appearance was postponed to next Tuesday because Schultz was “not in a position” to appear in court, but he thought the charge could be reduced to trespassing.
Mr. Schultz is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, and Mr. Ellis said he is on lockdown in a psychiatric ward.
Mr. Ellis’ relationship with Mr. Schultz goes back 14 years. In 2014, they were photographed with filmmaker Liz Goldwyn at the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles.
Over the years, Mr. Schulz’s hair color has changed many times. On Instagram, he defended Dogecoin, accused Gov. Gavin Newsom of leading the “enslavement” of Britney Spears, and posted apocalyptic warnings about the actions of big tech companies like Google.
He also records music. His song “Hotel” on iTunes describes “an empty bottle on the ground” as “reminding me of how I feel right now.”
Schultz posted a post announcing his intention to run for West Hollywood City Council in 2021. He said his signature issues will be noise pollution, government accountability, corruption, homeowners associations and putting the interests of residents over developers over city planning issues. Schultz promised to provide “accountability, transparency and fun.” But nothing came of him after that.
Last November, Schultz posted a video of himself announcing his intention to run for president of the United States as the Republican candidate. In the video, Schultz described himself as having lived in West Hollywood for 14 years. He worked as a writing teacher and said he was born at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and raised in the San Fernando Valley.
“I’m the best option,” he said. “I’m the best option for Republicans to win, but I’m better than Democrats.”
In the video, Schultz was wearing a navy blazer and a light blue button-down shirt. His eyes were cloudy and his words sounded a little slurred.
Mr. Ellis frequently appeared on Mr. Schultz’s feed.
Last April, Schultz uploaded a video of Ellis picking out produce at a grocery store. In a photo posted last month, Mr. Schultz stood in the foreground with a stunned expression on his face, wearing only his open-necked bathrobe. Mr. Ellis could be seen reading on his computer in the background.
Mr. Schultz has filed a series of lawsuits in recent months, including one in January against Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The complaint accuses Musk of interfering with Schultz’s presidential campaign. The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice five days after it was filed, according to court records.
On Wednesday, Ellis announced in Variety that he will make his directorial debut with Relapse, a horror film that “centers around his signature cast of young, handsome and wealthy characters.” . Ellis told Variety that it will be a personal film.
“Sex, drugs, paranoia, it’s going to give me a stroke,” Ellis reportedly said.
