Some of the highest-grossing films in Indian history are available to stream on Netflix. While Netflix has built up an impressive catalog of original Indian films over the years, most of its Indian collection still consists of what was available in theaters. Some of those theatrical releases include the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
Based on Wikipedia’s list of the highest-grossing Indian films, which is updated regularly based on global box office collections, Netflix currently owns 15 of India’s top 50 global hits. I have streaming rights.
This list includes movies originally produced in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. However, for nearly every non-Hindi film on the list, Netflix only pays streaming rights fees for the Hindi-dubbed version, and streams the original language version elsewhere.
World box office information isn’t always available (or reliable), so many of the numbers cited in the Wikipedia list are revenue ranges rather than specific numbers. Note that these sums are approximations, as the ranges themselves can be quite large. Amounts were converted from Indian Rupees to US Dollars based on current exchange rates and rounded to the nearest million.
