Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 2.
abbott elementary school Season 4 brings back all of the fan-favorite characters in different grades, but there’s one big change from the start. After three seasons of growth, Janine (Quinta Branson) and Gregory (tyler james williams) They finally became a couple. But their relationship doesn’t just affect them. It’s frustrating because all the teachers try to hide it, but Jacob (Chris Perfetti) The storyline in particular definitely changed when they started dating. Previously, Jacob spent a considerable amount of time getting caught in the middle of his friend building a romance between Janine and Gregory. There was no longer any need to urge them to unite, and Jacob threatened to become a third wheel forever. Season 4 gave him his own story.
As a school teacher, Jacob appears a lot in the series, but he is usually in a B-plot or a character who gives advice rather than making decisions. Rarely the focus of the series, Jacob is relegated to a punchline position. Although Janine has always been the central figure, other teachers have also shown great growth over the years. Gregory went from being insecure to becoming a passionate educator. Barbara (sheryl lee ralph) I have learned to recognize that others have a different way of doing things. Even Eva (janelle james) She herself has proven herself to be an unconventional but important part of the school’s vitality. Jacob didn’t have a similar opportunity, but season 4 will soon give him his own storyline as he deals with a ringworm outbreak in episode 2. The changes were gradual, though, as the characters started doing more in season three. Jacob becomes the central character of the episode. This proves that the character won’t be sidelined in the wake of Janine and Gregory’s relationship, and allows the show to expand into new territory.
What does Jacob do in “Abbott Elementary” Season 4 Episode 2?
Jacob, who is at the center of the story, notices a ringworm outbreak in his class for the first time. The teachers quickly isolate him and the students, but Jacob unintentionally allows the infection to spread. This twist highlights his desire to be liked by his students, who accuse him of being a dictator for trying to enforce the isolation that his colleagues believe is necessary. When ringworm spreads, Jacob comes up with a new solution: One teacher volunteers to monitor a room full of infected children and sacrifice herself for the greater good. Jacob even calls himself a hero for his co-workers’ recognition, although he is unable to actually stop the ringworm spread.
Jacob’s story provides character growth. He went from ignoring his colleagues’ concerns to volunteering to help contain the outbreak. This is especially important because the problem is due to class differences. Jacob is not concerned about the spread of infection because he believes it is easy to separate children, but while Abbott teaches older students, the rest of the school has younger students who are harder to separate. There is. What may not be a big deal to Jacob is a challenge to the rest of the school, and Jacob, understanding that, takes responsibility and proves himself willing to learn from others.
“Abbott Elementary School” gradually expands Jacob’s role
Although Jacob has few big scenes, he has had hero moments in the past. In the previous season, Jacob arranged for the students to go on a field trip even though he wasn’t able to due to financial constraints. Even Janine had other things to focus on, but Jacob relentlessly searches for a solution to the problem, eventually leading them to a park and a room full of strangers to help them make reservations. I came up with the idea of securing it. Allow Jacob to fulfill the typical role of Janine Solve problems creatively to benefit students gave him a chance to show his prioritiesas most teachers do. However, he never really grew as a character, and Season 3 didn’t give him much opportunity for other growth.

Jacob is seen developing a friendship with Melissa (lisa ann walter) when they become roommates, when she receives advice from Gregory about breaking up with her boyfriend, and when Barbara and Melissa are hurt when she uses AI to reply to his emails. But these are all side stories and don’t focus solely on him. Although these stories are important to Jacob, they do not provide him with any significant character growth. Having Jacob become the focal point of “Ringworm” proves that the series is willing to separate him from other characters’ arcs and give him opportunities to grow. The character’s presence has grown over the years, but Season 4 is a big step for Jacob and one he’s been waiting for.
Making Jacob a bigger character will benefit ‘Abbott Elementary School’
Jacob has long been Janine’s best friend at Abbott University and is instrumental in Gregory’s growth as a teacher, but his lack of personal planning has left him stagnant. Because of his friendship with both Janine and Gregory, he encouraged them and helped unite them, but now that they are firmly in a relationship, that role is unnecessary. In “Ringworm,” he jokes about this dynamic, asking if a couple needs a third wheel for movie night, before an outbreak derails things. abbott elementary school Finally gives Jacob his purposeprevents him from falling into the trap of being the third wheel.
Of course, one episode isn’t enough to accomplish this, but this series brings a new dynamic to Jacob. “Ringworm” highlights one of the big differences when teaching older students compared to other teachers’ younger students. This has not been considered previously in this series, as most teachers have younger students. Jacob’s relationship with his students opens new possibilities. Jacob is given the name “Mr. C” because of his corny joke, which he accepts. He is also willing to learn from them, as they inspired his solution to the ringworm epidemic.
