On that fateful day five years ago, my mother wore Midsummer and said it would be a “black comedy.” As we’ve already seen, we knew that wasn’t the case. Ari Asterprevious work, geneticI thought it was great. Still, I was expecting a thrilling and engaging horror that would give me lots of thematic ideas to think about by the end. If anything, I was upset and frankly upset by how poor this movie was. Midsummer The story follows a group of friends who go to a midsummer festival in Sweden and witness shocking scenes of violence. Florence PughThe character, Dani, remains, Embracing a cult community and leaving a tragic life behind. So, this movie wasn’t a complete no-no for horror movies for me, but it made me very alert and anxious When you watch horror movies that center around cultists or use physical horror. The graphic physical horror on display was truly disturbing, and it felt like its primary intent was to shock the audience rather than provide a narrative.
I know that those who find it disgusting are in the minority. Midsummer. I’ve been racking my brain for years trying to see if I’m missing something. Why did I find this horror movie, hailed by many as one of the greatest horror movies of all time, so disturbing? But the more I thought about it and the more I compared it… genetic, I’m becoming increasingly disappointed, upset, and upset, but I’m sure that’s not what Aster intended.
“Midsommar’s use of disturbing imagery doesn’t serve the plot as well as Hereditary.”
From the beginning, Midsummer It uses disturbing ideas to set the tone, showing how Dani’s sister Terry kills her parents with carbon monoxide poisoning before committing suicide. This disturbing and brutal trend of thought continues.a strange mating ritual, the suicide of an elder, and the hollowed-out bear carcass that trapped the members of the group being set on fire. Simon (archie madekwe) teeth The last straw for me was having my lungs pulled out of my body and being tied up and still alive.. Rather than how material I used body horror to comment on the beauty standards that women are forced into. Midsummer I’m just using it to show how messed up this Swedish community is. Perhaps the only impressive thing about this film is the fact that all of this body horror was done on a tight budget of just $9 million.

These horror movies will haunt fans for years to come.
compared to genetic, We see a clear difference in Aster’s approach to purposefully confusing his audience. Girl Charlie (Milly Shapiro) sticks his head out of a car window and is decapitated, leaving his brother Peter (alex wolff) You can simply go upstairs and lie down in bed, or Annie will (toni colette) Husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne) Burn to death. These moments are so dark, But they are impactful because they have a narrative purpose.. Whether it’s showing how Peter doesn’t take responsibility for his actions or showing how a family is torn apart by grief, these moments make me realize things about the characters in subtle ways. I told them. compared to MidsummerWho and What Does a Hanged Man with a Ripped Lung Tell Us? Or a girl who keeps her pubic hair in a Christian home (jack reynor)pie? As I mentioned earlier, All this movie shows is that everyone in this community should be arrested.
‘Midsommar’ plagiarizes Swedish culture to the point of disrespecting it
Which brings us to the second problem. Midsummer: How to debase Swedish culture and link it to eugenics and ableism. The final scene, in which Dani finally relaxes at the commune while watching her boyfriend Christian burn alive, feels like Ari Aster’s attempt at a bittersweet ending to a disturbing story. At least Dani found a mate, right? Even if it led to brutal murders of people who weren’t very likable but didn’t deserve to die. It’s not bittersweet, but it does make me feel nauseous. Throughout the film, we see that Dani doesn’t belong, and the loss of her family in the opening scene emphasizes how alone she is. But there are millions of other ways to find allies without killing the people who let you down. If this community is the only place Dani feels comfortable, perhaps she is not entitled to find comfort or a sense of belonging.
This isn’t to say you can’t create a morally dark protagonist or have a cult as an antagonist. Some of the best movies of all time feature evil people, or at least people who commit horrible acts, as “heroes.” like The Godfather Part II, wolf of wall streetand american psycho. Get out has been praised for using cult horror tropes to comment on racism, raising the stakes and making the film overall scarier. But when the basis for these decisions is simply to confuse the audience, rather than having a truly valid message behind them; It left a bad aftertaste in my mouth and I didn’t feel any fear for a long time afterwards.
Thankfully I was able to get past the problem Midsummer It’s similar to the rest of the horror genre. I’m sure there are others out there who feel the same way I do, even if they’re in the minority, and have vowed to never watch horror again. Despite having high praise for Ari Aster’s previous work, Midsummer This movie was grotesque and there was little to support the horrific images being presented to me. compared to geneticthe imagery was close to the plot and the entire presentation of the Swedish festival and its culture felt like it lacked respect and purpose. I may be in the minority, but I would die on that hill Midsummer This is definitely not a movie recommended to people who want to enjoy horror again.
