Netflix’s all-new animated sitcom is now available worldwide, but there’s been some backlash to the idea of not only creating a new show based on the 1970s classic, but also rebooting it in the first place. It is no exaggeration. What’s the controversy about it? And how did the people behind the show react?
I have to say that when this show was first announced, it didn’t garner much heat from fans of the original or entertainment junkies in general. But when the first look was released in late March 2024, ahead of the April 12th premiere, it got people thinking. They were further amplified when the show’s official trailer was released on March 27, 2024.
As of publication, the trailer has over 50,000 likes compared to 5.8,000 likes. As the children say, it is proportionalized.
So what’s the crux of people’s problems with this show? It boils down to a few factors. First, it’s worth checking the original work and the themes it covers.
The original version, which aired from 1974 to 1979, featured strong social commentary in addition to its signature humor. Poverty was at the heart of the show, and the show focused on low-income families living in housing projects, and was one of the first shows to address this in the mainstream. The show also addressed issues of race, crime, education, family, and unemployment.
When the first photos were released, some people expressed cautious optimism in the preview comments section, but many wondered why Hollywood would want to reboot a classic. One of the most optimistic of our commenters was Sapphie Trojan, who posted:
“If they could keep the same premise as the original by tackling the issues with comedic grace, it would be a great production. One of them is that Black history is not taught the same way it is on standardized tests. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
Then the trailer fell.
A controversy then erupted on the internet.
YouTube’s commentary community in particular has been very outspoken in sharing their opinions about the anime series. Tiffany Byrd Harrison has one of his most viewed videos titled, “Netflix keeps playing with this garbage in front of our eyes.”
YouTubers who found the trailer disrespectful and uninspired said that what had been shown so far was full of offensive stereotypes and completely devoid of progressive themes. Other issues, along with the involvement of Stephen Curry and Seth McFarland, were the very concept of fathering a drug-dealing child.
There’s a lot more to read about this controversy, but this video sums up the biggest problem most people have with this controversy. To read more, we recommend checking out philip lewis tweethas been viewed more than 29.9 million times and has received a lot of attention.
Prior to its release, the series received criticism from the top of the NAACP, and although the sitcom’s original cast ultimately postponed the release of the entire series, they were not optimistic.
How did the creators respond to the backlash against Good Times?
Carl Jones, who has been involved with the project since its early days, has been vocal about distancing himself from the project, even though he is still labeled as a co-creator.in Tweet from March 28thThe Boondocks and Black Dynamite, among others, said:
“For the record, I was involved with the Good Times animated series from the beginning, but due to creative differences, I had to step back. I haven’t even seen an episode or script for this version of the show…”
Allison Foos, who contributed to the show, said she hoped people would check out the final product. saying:
“Since I wrote for this project, I know that we are different generations of the Evans family living in the same situation. Only if there is animation can I leave the apartment. I hope this work will work. I hope and I hope people at least stop speculating before watching it. Or maybe don’t.”
The show’s star, Yvette Nicole Brown, responded to a fan’s question about why she would take on such a project in a tweet:
This version of #goodtimes It’s more radical and irreverent than the Good Times of our childhood, but it’s still a story about family, fighting against the system, and striving to make things better, no matter where you start in the world. It’s a program. It matches my values 100%. https://t.co/4lNRbMhxK2

how well will it work good times Will you be performing on Netflix? We’ll have to wait and see in the coming weeks and months. Still, after Netflix experienced a series of failures in the adult anime space, especially in the comedy space (blue eye samurai is one of its recent successes), it will be interesting to see if this gets a season 2 renewal (or if more pre-orders are given).
