Johannesburg-based Mannequin Pictures, one of South Africa’s leading production, finance and distribution companies, has sold its continental rights to the comedy documentary series ‘The World’s Strangest Jobs’ to Prime Video.
Mannequin is currently on sale in all other regions. The eight-part series will be hosted by comedian and actor Schalk Bezuidenhout. The popular South African comic, well known in his home country, balances his SAFTA award-winning acting work (Hotel) with his income as a comic. Most recently, he appeared on Netflix’s stand-up comedy show “Only Jokes Allowed.”
In his latest work, Bezuidenhout travels the world in search of the titular “world’s strangest job” and discovers many jobs, from pet detective in New York to rent-a-boyfriend in Tokyo.
“We are thrilled that Prime Video has picked up this original show that will give viewers a front row seat to a career that no one could have imagined,” said Deron Bakker, CEO of Mannequin. said.
It’s no surprise that streamers continue to flock to the region. An Ampere Analysis report late last year predicted that global streamers could drive 75% growth in sub-Saharan Africa’s subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) market. By the end of 2027, his annual revenue is expected to be $220 million. The competitive environment is different than in many other regions of the world, as Showmax is a serious local competitor to global streaming platforms.
The Strangest Job in the World is produced by Mannequin Pictures’ Deron Bakker and Kyle Ambrose. The company recently wrapped production on the theatrical version of “London Calling,” directed by Alan Unger (“Bandit”) and starring Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”) and Rick Hoffman (“Suits”).
Highland Film Group is handling international sales for “London Calling.”
