The December 2024 line-up has been shaken up, as it has been revealed that Kneecap, an Irish language comedy-drama about a Belfast-based rap trio, will be produced. patellawill make its streaming debut on Netflix in the US, courtesy of a first window deal with Sony Pictures. The film will be available on Netflix for 18 months starting December 2, 2024.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year, making it the first Irish-language film to be released. It has also been submitted as an Irish film for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.
The film is from writer and director Rich Peppiatt, known for films such as: one fraudulent reporter, backseat driverand Follow Robert Barker. The film tells the story of the birth of a rap group that became one of the poster boys in an attempt to save the Irish language, which had been in decline for many years. Members of the group appear in the film, including Mo Challa, Moghlai Bapu, DJ Provai, Josie Walker and Simone Kirby, and Michael Fassbender, who has Irish and German roots, also makes a special appearance.
The film, which is certified Fresh on RottenTomatoes, played in select theaters over the summer and received rave reviews praising the film’s authenticity. In his review, Filipe Freitas of Always Good Movies wrote, “The film’s sensational presentation is like a pastiche of Trainspotting (1996) or 8 Mile (2002), with Guy… There’s a little bit of Richie’s gangster flair thrown in.”
Kneecap came to Netflix in 2021 through a first window deal with Sony Pictures. At the time, Sony Pictures and most of its subsidiaries joined Netflix after an 18-month theatrical release period before being released on Hulu or Disney+.
Sony Pictures Classics is only distributing this film in the United States, so we cannot predict when or if it will be available in other territories on Netflix. Curzon Film and Wildcard Distribution own the UK and Irish rights to the film, respectively.
