Netflix’s first live sports event ended with a bang, with the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson lasting eight rounds, with Paul winning by unanimous decision.
Immediately after the match, Paul was humble about his win: “First and foremost, Mike Tyson…I’m so honored. Let’s give up on Mike, he’s a legend. He’s the greatest person to ever do it. He’s a goat. I respect him. I am inspired by him, and without him we wouldn’t be here today.”
“I didn’t prove anything to anyone, just myself,” Tyson said of his performance. He also gave Paul props as an athlete, saying, “He’s a very good fighter.”
The November 15th game was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Presenters and commentators included Roy Jones Jr., Cedric the Entertainer, Kate Abdo, and Rosie Perez. Ahead of the fight, Netflix released “Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson,” a documentary series about the two athletes preparing for the fight.
There were three matches on the main card before Paul vs. Tyson. The first was a super middleweight fight, where Neeraj Goyat defeated Winderson Nunes. The second match was a welterweight bout between Mario Barrios and Abel Ramos, which ended in a split draw with Barrios retaining the WBC welterweight title. The co-main event was a rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, with Taylor emerging victorious.
Netflix had buffering issues during many parts of the broadcast, with fans complaining on social media about blurry or delayed video during live events.
