In 2011, French actresses Omar Sy and Anne Le Ny co-starred in the comedy hit ‘The Untouchables’. Currently, the two are reunited in the domestic thriller movie “Out of Control”, starring Elodie Bushes (“All Your Face”, “Angel’s Dream Life”), Jose Garcia (“Totems”, “The Ax”) “) and Vanessa Paradis (“Knife + Heart,” “Cafe de Flor”) are the directors, with Le Nie also serving as the accelerator. Cashman co-author.
“There was a real bond and warmth between us at the time, and it was easy to rekindle that 13 years later,” she said, co-starring with Matt Damon in Stillwater and starring in the breakthrough film. Li Ni, who won the screenplay and director award for the first time, said. “Those Who Remain” (2008).
Her seventh picture as a helmer, Out of Control (Dis moi juste que tu m’aimes), had its world premiere in official competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 16th. , co-produced by Move Movie’s Bruno Levy. A co-production with Sy’s production company CoroCoro, France 2 Cinema, La Compagnie Cinematography & Panache Productions, and supported by Canal+. Disney+ and French Television. M6 Group’s SND will be responsible for global sales and sales in France, scheduled for February 19, 2025.
“I am thrilled to have been selected for this competition and to be competing in Tallinn. I am a big fan of Eduard von Keyserling, a Baltic German novelist who wrote about the historical region of Courland,” said Le Nie. speaks passionately.
With “Out of Control,” she returns to the thriller genre first tested in “Le Trent,” which headlined Garcia. “I wanted to explore this work from a slightly different angle, where drama and suspense suddenly flare up in an ordinary household.”
In this picture, Sy plays Julian, a school counselor who is married to Marie (Bouchez) and a father of two. When Julien’s first love, Anael (Paradi), returns to town, an insecure Marie worries that she won’t be able to survive Anael’s irresistible charm and sustain their 15-year marriage. He finds solace in his capricious boss Tomas (Garcia). But what she thought was a one-time event turns into a dangerous obsession for Thomas.
“This is a psychological thriller about manipulation and deception, with love at the core,” Le Nie says. “Stories about first love and the end of love are often seen on screen, but stories about the ‘in-between’ of love and eternal love are rare. The question is, what is left of love in a 15-year marriage that has become more like a business partnership? It’s a thriller about a couple discussing laundry and heating issues. I wanted the focus to be on domesticity and to make it feel like an organic material in the photograph,” says Le Nie.
To enrich the content of the film, the filmmakers used a variety of marriage-related works, including Ingmar Bergman’s “A Marriage Scene,” Woody Allen’s “Husbands and Wives,” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” We looked for inspiration in classic photography. And, of course, Adrian Lyne’s suspenseful film about a neurotic obsession, Fatal Attraction.
“‘Fateful Attraction’ is a great suspense thriller, but it’s also full of gender clichés,” says Le Ni. “In the movie Michael Douglas’ wife (played by Anne Archer) is of course a housewife, but his lover Glenn Close is an independently successful woman, but a complete lunatic! Hence my idea was to reverse the situation and make Sy a cheated husband who has to support his wife.”
According to Le Ny, the theme of marriage was also one of the reasons Sy participated. “Omar has been in long-term marital relationships, which is not very common in our profession,” she emphasized with a smile. “He loved his character and the fact that Julian’s job as a school counselor was to ‘fix’ things. At the same time, Julian is very romantic. Although he never got over his first love, he was able to move on and live happily ever after with Marie. ”
To play the nuanced role, See “had to dig deep into his heart and soul and look for something else that was restrained and didn’t rely on his natural charm or glamor.” It was a pleasure to work with,” says Le Nee.
As character actors, Les Ni also praises the other three actors. Garcia made Tomas a “narcissistic pervert, absolutely charming, sincere and completely believable” and made Paradis the ideal ex-lover, both menacing and seductive. the helmsman asks mischievously. Bouchess was then able to incorporate “a lot of delicacy, vulnerability, and something that gradually developed into the photographs, combined with an inner strength.” “
In the end, Le Nie said, “Out of Control” goes beyond thriller tropes and tells the story of “the lead female character, who is initially seduced by her boss, but when she realizes his nervous behavior, she pushes him away.” “It’s an empowering story of resilience that can be achieved.” “I wanted to show that yes, it is possible to stand up to predators,” she says.
Filming took place in and around the city of Vannes in Brittany, one of the helmer’s best spots in France. “Thanks to the team and the four lead actors, all of whom are charming and very different in their personal lives, and despite a very wet shoot and three major storms, we had a great time. ” commented Le Ni.
“Out of Control” will compete for the 20,000 euro ($21,300) grand prize in Tallinn, with the award ceremony scheduled for November 23, the festival’s closing night.
