In a monologue on HBO’s “Real Time” on Friday, Bill Maher described a week of pop culture reactions to Donald Trump’s reelection, including confirmation that “I didn’t vote for the winner,” A West Hollywood pot shop co-owned by actor Woody Harrelson.
On election night, Maher momentarily marveled at Trump’s decisive victory.
“Trump won all seven swings and ran through the tables. Trump won so much today that he called the Georgia Secretary of State and asked him to lose 11,000 votes,” Maher said, adding that Trump won by a landslide today. Mindful of the 2020 Georgia election controversy that led to felony charges against the president. “He has a great coalition. He kept the old crowd that liked him. He won a lot of new voters. He has people who say they just want to see what he does. I call this “Get the Cat High Vote.” ”
He affirmed his vote for Trump’s Democratic challenger, Vice President Kamala Harris. “According to exit polls, he had the support of 52% of white women. He won their votes as well,” Maher quipped about President Trump’s strength on women.
Maher pointed to a rightward shift among voters, including in liberal Los Angeles, where a California ballot measure that would make shoplifting a felony again was driven by voters tired of seeing a spike in misdemeanor crimes at local drug stores and 7-Elevens. It was passed easily.
“Even liberal Los Angeles said, ‘Here’s an idea: instead of locking up toothpaste, why don’t we lock up shoplifters?'”
Maher said the problem of rampant retail crime in major cities “was brought home to me this week.” He revealed that The Woods, a West Hollywood pot shop he co-owns with actor Woody Harrelson, was robbed the day before the Nov. 5 election. He said an arrest has already been made in this case.
“They just broke the window and came in, and the joke was on them, you know? Why? Because they got the guy. He left because our pot tasted so good. I forgot,” Maher said.
Ma’s first guest was actor Michael Douglas, who paid tribute to the host. The son of influential Hollywood Golden Age star Kirk Douglas, who died in 2020 at the age of 101, says that toward the end of his father’s life, “all he watched was Ultimate Fighting.” he told Maher. [Championship] you too. ”
Mr. Maher has been outspoken about supporting the Democratic Party in this year’s presidential election, and last week told undecided voters that “I’m not Mr. Trump,” which in itself means he would vote for Ms. Harris. “It’s a really big reason,” he said. In September, Maher took issue with President Trump’s comments that “Jews will have a lot of work to do” regarding his possible loss in the presidential election.
“Every time a dictator starts blaming Jews, I think that’s a great sign, because when has that ever turned out badly?” Maher said on “Real Time.”
President Trump fired back at Maher on his social media platform Truth Social, calling the HBO host “disorganized, sloppy, tired, and over every conversation with B-list and C-list guests.” ”, he criticized.
Maher’s comments about the presidential election came after nearly every late-night talk show host weighed in on Tuesday’s results. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Taylor Tomlinson, and Seth Meyers all expressed at length their disappointment with the election results. John Oliver will address the issue on Sunday evening’s latest episode of “Last Week Tonight.”
“It was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue Wednesday night. “And guess what? It was a bad night for the people who voted for him, too. You just don’t realize it yet.”
