A new conspiracy theory about search giant Google has taken root in the high-profile election day race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, Google “Where can I vote for Harris?” Displays a “Where to Vote” map where users can enter their address and find their polling place. But if you search for “Where can I vote for Trump?” on Google, you won’t see a similar map.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the apparent discrepancy.
Indeed, interested voters are far more likely to simply search for “where can I vote,” and this query will bring them a map of “where to vote?”
If you search for “Where can I vote for Harris?” on Google, you’ll get different results. vs. “Where can I vote for Trump?” Called by the DogeDesigner account in a post to X. According to their profile, they are “UX/UI and Graphic Designers at Dogecoin & MyDoge Inc.” The post was brought to the attention of Elon Musk, owner of X and CEO of Telsa and SpaceX, who is a big supporter of Trump. “Are others seeing this?” Musk asked in a post that cited DogeDesigner’s comments along with a video showing various Google searches.
DogeDesigner’s post claims that “Google is the largest corporate donor to the Democratic Party.” According to OpenSecrets, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) contributed $14.85 million in federal contributions to Democrats during the 2023-2024 election cycle, followed by Netflix, which donated $9.89 million to Democrats.
According to Open Secrets, Musk’s SpaceX donated $129.4 million to Republicans and $723,883 to Democrats during the 2023-24 election cycle.
