The humble hippo finally has a chance to shine on the big screen thanks to an upcoming project launching at the American Film Market.
“Hungry,” a survival thriller published by Signature Entertainment, pits a group of tourists against a hungry hippopotamus, and is the work of James Nunn, creator of the “One Shot” action thriller series. Principal photography has now begun in Malta, with Nunn directing from his own script and Signature’s head of UK production Ben Jack (One More Shot, The Hatton Garden Job) producing. is in charge of Signature CEO Mark Goldberg and Head of Production Development Sara Gabriel (“Riff Raff,” “The Estate”) will serve as executive producer.
“I’m hungry.” The film centers on a group of vacationers who, after getting lost in the Louisiana swamps, must fight for their lives against a roaming, rampaging hippo.
In parallel with the announcement of this project, Signature secured a number of contracts, including Spain’s Acontra Corriente. CDC of Latin America. Phoenicia in the Middle East. Daro in Eastern Europe, Garth Pasaulio Irasai in the Baltics, and Shoval in Israel. Rights also went to India (Lionsgate Play), Malaysia and Singapore (Suraya), Thailand (Sahamongkor), the Philippines (Pioneer), Turkey’s Tanweer, Mongolia (Filmbridge) and CIS (Exponenta).
The film’s key behind-the-scenes talent includes award-winning MUFX designer Dan Martin (“The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Possessor,” “Infinity Pool”) and VFX company Magic Dust VFX (“True Detectives: Night Kingdom, One Piece) participated in a project to bring the Hungry’s hippos to life.
Nunn’s previous feature films include the one-take action series “One Shot” (2021) and his latest film “One More Shot.” (2024) Along with the shark thriller “Sharkbait” (2022).
