Starring new animated series ‘Gentry Chow vs. The Underworld’ beef Starring Ali Wong as the title character, the film will premiere on Netflix in December 2024.
Gentry Chow vs. Underworld is an upcoming Netflix original animated series created by Echo Wu and animated by Gotham Group. Wu is the series’ showrunner, director, and co-writer with James Hamilton and Ryan Haller.
The series is executive produced by Aaron Eli Colerite, Antonio Canobbio, Matthew Mahoney, Ben Kalina, Chris Plinoski, Shannon Plinoski, and Ali Wong.
Creator Echo Wu had a lot to say to Netflix about this series.
“Finding your identity sometimes means facing your own demons,” Wu tells Tudam. That sentiment was the north star of the writers’ room working on the series. “There are different layers to what that means. [It] At Gentry, that’s exactly the case. [She’s] Trying to understand what these powers mean to her. Are they part of her? Are they cursing her? You can see this character trying to figure out who he is. ”
Not only is the show’s theme rooted in reality, but the animation itself also strives to immerse viewers in a world that largely resembles our own, minus the ghosts and mythical creatures. “I wanted this show to be very grounded,” Wu says. “I think it’s refreshing in animation to have a series outside of this magical world. I wanted it to feel authentic and the characters to be in our world.”
Wu’s commitment to authentically portraying this period in a young woman’s life also extended to how the show approached Gentry’s much-coveted power. “If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would take it very well. I think she would actually hide it. At a time when you’re trying so hard, you think having power is social suicide. It was an interesting dynamic to play.”
