This is awkward…
We thought the biggest fuss at this year’s Oscars would be the absence of Messi, the dog from Anatomy of the Fall, but some Academy members weren’t happy about the award. It is rumored that Messi will not attend the ceremony in the next few hours. A dog patrolling.
In all seriousness, some companies with nominated films are unhappy with this good boy attending the Oscars luncheon because he’s unfairly boosting their films during the voting period. Ta.
Just like old Hollywood…
But now an even bigger bomb has been dropped.
The Oscar-nominated film The Holdovers is a major awards contender with five nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing (and Favorite Movie of 2023). One of the Oscars ceremonies facing controversy just a few hours ago.
Alexander Payne’s film, written by David Heminson, has been accused of plagiarism line by line. To make matters worse, the film was nominated for Best Original Screenplay along with Maestro, Anatomy of a Fall, May December and Past Lives, whose voting period ended late last month. It is being done.
Luca and Paddington 2 screenwriter Simon Stevenson says the script has striking similarities to his unproduced 2013 script Frisco. The film is about a cynical pediatrician who ends up taking care of a teenage patient for several days. “The Holdovers” stars Paul Giamatti (tonight’s Best Actor nominee alongside Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer”) as a cynical, world-weary man who takes care of teenagers at a boarding school for a few days. I’m playing a teacher.
Stevenson presented a document comparing scenes from both scripts and sent it to the WGA for help in January. Now, Variety has published one of those documents, reporting on Stevenson.
“The meaningful entirety of the script for ‘THE HOLDOVERS’ was copied by transposition from FRISCO’s script,” the document states. “This includes the entire story of a FRISCO screenplay, its structure, sequences, scenes, sequential subbeats within a scene, line-by-line content of action and dialogue, characters, arcs, relationships, themes and tone. Parts are done line by line, and the many unique and very special elements created with FRISCO are immediately clearly identifiable within THE HOLDOVERS.”
Variety reported that Stevenson had been in several months of discussions with the WGA to address his claims.
To further complicate matters, Payne received the script for Frisco in 2013 and 2019, just before the director later tapped Heminson to co-produce The Holdovers. , it is a fact that is claimed.
To be continued… But if The Holdovers wins any major Oscars tonight, likely two, those wins will be overshadowed by outrageous controversy.
