Best new movies and series added to Netflix this week
The End of Tomorrow (2014)
evaluation: PG-13
language: English
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
director: Doug Liman
cast: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton
Author: Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, John Henry Butterworth
runtime: 113 minutes / 1 hour 53 minutes
Chosen as one of the most anticipated films throughout September, the sci-fi time loop movie starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt was released in theaters 10 years ago and is just as memorable today.
The film depicts humanity’s final defense against a seemingly invincible alien race, and sees one soldier relive a pivotal day of the war over and over again until he finds a way to defeat the formidable enemy.
The film has been praised for its acting and stunning VFX throughout, making it the perfect Sunday night watch, and with any luck, a little nudge from Netflix might prove to Warner Bros. that the long-rumored sequel is worth greenlighting.
Stone Hand (2016)
evaluation: R
language: English
Genre: Biography, Drama, Sports
director: Jonathan Jakubowicz
cast: Edgar Ramirez, Robert De Niro, Usher Raymond, Oscar Jaenada, Jurnee Smollett, Ellen Barkin
Author: Jonathan Jakubowicz
runtime: 111 minutes / 1 hour 51 minutes
A surprise addition to Netflix’s US library this weekend was the boxing movie “Hands of Stone,” starring Edgar Ramirez and Robert De Niro. The story is based on the real-life boxing trainer Ray Arcel, who came out of retirement to train a Panamanian boxer named Roberto Duran with the dream of making boxing history.
Considering that Robert De Niro is soon to star in a Netflix original series (Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman for Netflix); Zero-dayif you haven’t seen it yet, now is the perfect time to do so. Like all films licensed by The Weinstein Company, it’s ad-blocked, so you’ll need the Netflix Premium tier to watch it.
Rebel Ridge (2024) Netflix Original
evaluation: TV-MA
language: English
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
director: Jeremy Saulnier
cast: Aaron Pierre, Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb
Author: Jeremy Saulnier
runtime: 131 minutes / 2 hours 11 minutes
Rebel Ridge, which received glowing reviews from most media outlets and rave reviews from audiences over the weekend, was a film that looked like it might never get released, but I’m so glad it did.
“An ex-Marine takes on small-town corruption when local police wrongfully confiscate a bag containing cash needed for his cousin’s bail,” the logline reads.
We’re giving the film equally high scores and it will undoubtedly rank as one of our favorites for all of 2024. Our resident critic had this to say about the new thriller:
“Jeremy Saulnier returns to form with his grunge-rock ‘Loud Quiet Loud,’ bringing a moody yet intense aesthetic to this neo-Western crime thriller. Aaron Pierre stands out with a commanding performance that’s a perfect fit for Saulnier’s magnetic style.”
