Daniel Dae Kim talks about the early debut of Netflix’s Fire Lord Ozai Avatar: The Last Airbender, explains how the character’s early appearances add depth to the live-action show. The 2024 fantasy show is an adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series and follows a privileged boy who knows all four elements as he fights to conquer the Fire Nation. Kim’s Ozai is the current ruler of the Fire Nation in his family’s dynasty, and is attempting to carry out actions that would bring the entire world under this nation’s control.
On the other hand, Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender Renewed for two more seasons, Kim opens up GQ Regarding Ozai’s debut early in season 1 and how it adjusts the character’s role in the story. Kim adds further characterization to Zuko’s (Dallas Liu) story, giving depth to the early chapters of Anne’s (Gordon Cormier) journey, and understanding who he is and what motivates his mission. He explained that Ozai’s early appearances were featured in order to define who he was. Check out Kim’s full explanation below.
I think it was a dramaturgy function. Efforts were made to deepen all the main characters early on. When you look at Sokka’s story and Katara’s story, certain elements are pushed. I think the reason they pushed my story was to serve Zuko. Because I wanted to feel what his motives were and why he was relentlessly pursuing Anne. I personally applaud this decision. Because I think you care about the main four things much more than you would otherwise. It’s the right decision.
The debut work of Ozai and Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu), Mai (Talia Tran), and Ty Lee (Momoda Tanada) Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s source material, the Fire Nation sequences manage to add more depth and detail to dynamics that weren’t explored in the animated series until later episodes. Through Ozai and Azula’s interactions, the audience gets a glimpse of how the Fire Lord manipulates children into competing with each other for his affections. But Zuko’s origins are perhaps most developed through new plots and scenes set within his Fire Nation flashbacks.
together Avatar: The Last Airbender Utilizing flashbacks of the actions that led to Zuko’s expulsion, he shows compassion and strength as a leader through his concern for the well-being of the 41st Division, and the funeral of Iroh’s (Paul Seung-Hyun Lee) son Lu Ten. Flashbacks show how he acted. He is different from other Fire Nation nobles. Although Ozai and the others consider Lu Ten’s death just and honorable, Zuko instead sits with Iroh to remember who Lu Ten was. Not only is Zuko and her Iroh’s strong bond established, but Zuko’s potential for good is highlighted in these new scenes.
Ozai’s previous appearances on Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender While it doesn’t build up to the later, more creepy debut, the added depth of Zuko’s new and additional scenes is definitely a worthwhile trade-off. Kim’s early appearances as Ozai established a ruthless and despotic figure who has little mercy, even for his family, because he is so focused on conquest. And since Kim wants to further explore Ozai’s descent into villainy, his early debut could leave room for more original scenes and flashbacks.
The live-action film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is available to stream on Netflix.
