Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya’s frenzy swept through London on Thursday night as Hollywood fanatics turned out on the red carpet for the world premiere of their new film Dune Part 2.
Enthusiastic fans lined up for hours to see them, chanting their names as they entered.
There was an audible sigh from the crowd when Zendaya finally appeared in a stunning metallic suit.
The long-awaited sequel was originally scheduled to premiere last fall.
The release date had been postponed due to the Hollywood actors and writers strike that plagued the industry for much of last year.
Director Denis Villeneuve told BBC News: “It’s such a relief to finally be able to release the film.” He added that he plans to “bite his nails” until the movie actually opens next month.
Florence Pugh and Austin Butler were also among the star-studded cast celebrating the film’s release.
This epic science fiction film is based on the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert, which won numerous awards including the Hugo Award.
Paul Atreides (Chalamet) teams up with his girlfriend Chani (Zendaya) to follow the journey of the Fremen desert people against a vast enemy force.
In the sequel, Chalamet’s character learns special ways to survive on a barren desert planet while seeking revenge on the conspirators who destroyed his family.
Chalamet admitted that he felt “a little pressure” to see the role through, given the film’s critical and commercial success.
Speaking on the red carpet, the star said he hopes Dune: Part 3 will continue. “I hope so, I hope so,” he said.
The world of Dune can be very confusing to those who are not familiar with the book. It’s filled with mysterious prophecies, giant sandworms, and competing factions.
But for many of the fans who attended Thursday’s event in Leicester Square, the original story wasn’t the main reason they were there.
“I’m so excited to meet Timothée Chalamet,” said one excited fan. “I love him,” declared another girl clutching a cardboard cutout of Chalamet.
Another fan told the BBC they had been waiting to catch a glimpse of Zendaya.
Chalamet rose to fame with 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, at the time becoming the youngest actor ever to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.
Since then, he has become an internet sensation and the pinup of choice for millennials and Gen Z.
Zendaya, 27, is well known as a fashion icon and has built a loyal following after starring in Spider-Man and Dune: Part 1 with her boyfriend Tom Holland.
There were also plenty of screams as Masters of Air actor Butler entered the venue, supported by his model girlfriend Kaia Gerber.
Butler, best known for his award-winning role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis (2022), made his Dune debut as the bald, eyebrowless villain Fayed Raussa.
“It was a really fun character to play,” Butler said. He added that he was a “huge fan” of this book as well as his first film. “So it was just the time in my life to address this issue.”
Also new to the Dune series is Oppenheimer actress Pugh, who will star as a new character, Princess Irulan.
Asked to compare the character to other memorable roles, Pugh told BBC News: “She’s completely different to anything I’ve ever played.”
“The same wisdom and boldness is still there, but it’s all subdued, so maybe we need to spread our wings in a different position, and everyone in this cast feels very lucky to be able to do that.” I needed Dennis to guide me the way I was.”
The star-studded cast also includes Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Paul Atreides’ mother, and Josh Brolin, who plays General Gurney Halleck.
Christopher Walken, who plays Emperor Shadam, is also new to the sequel, but did not attend the London premiere.

Following the huge success of the first game, expectations for Dune: Part Two are extremely high.
Dune Part 1, released in October 2021, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won six awards in the categories of Cinematography, Editing, Music, Visual Effects, Production Design, and Sound.
It was also a box office success, earning over $400 million worldwide.
Expectations for the new movie are so high, even inspired trendy popcorn bucketwith a sandworm-shaped lid.
It remains to be seen how audiences around the world will react to Dune Part 2, but for fans who got to see their idols Chalamet, Zendaya, and their co-stars at the premiere, this was the night they’ve been waiting for. Ta.
Dune 2 will be released in UK cinemas on March 1, 2024.
