In Episode 13, the penultimate episode, viewers finally get to see Emma and Dexter as a couple. They are married, about to have children, and working on buying their first family home. However, the end of the episode is completely devastating as Emma gets hit by a car and dies.
This frightening sudden moment is true to the original novel, which received considerable criticism when it was first published in 2009.
At the time, David Nichols defended the ending, explaining that it remained the same. one day Don’t be too predictable. “You have to do something shocking, otherwise it’s just a ‘do or don’t’ story of best friends who might be able to do something more. When asked if there was any pressure from Hollywood to change the ending of the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway, Nichols said: “Nobody suggested we change the ending. We wouldn’t have done it any other way. I don’t think I can do it,” he added.
Now, head writer Nicole Taylor explains the thought process behind keeping the same ending for the Netflix series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Taylor revealed that she and her writing team had “thoroughly considered” whether to keep the shocking twist of Emma’s sudden death in the series.
“I didn’t feel any pressure to change the ending or maintain the ending,” she said. She said, “I just wanted to re-interview him considering his place in the work.”
Ultimately, it was deemed necessary to include this in order to maintain the “structural and thematic integrity” of the series.
