2025 Oscar predictions:
Best Film Editing Award

Weekly commentary (updated October 3, 2024): At 88 minutes for “A Real Pain” and 91 minutes for “September 5,” these films’ short lengths are in stark contrast to last year’s record-breaking nominations, when two three-hour films were nominated for Best Picture. (“Killers of the Flower Moon” and eventual winner “Oppenheimer”). A question arises here. Are AMPAS’ attention spans shifting towards shorter and longer movies, or will they prefer quick, effective and refreshing movie viewing?
Historically, feature films have had a prominent presence in the film editing category, with their long running times giving editors more opportunity to showcase their skills in maintaining narrative flow, pacing, and tension. Films such as The Irishman (209 minutes) and Dances with Wolves (181 minutes) were praised for their editing despite their length. However, the nature of short films often requires more concise and efficient storytelling, and editing can be difficult as well. Could the branch aim to reward some of these films this year?
While full-length epics (i.e. Ben-Hur and Titanic) are praised for their ambitious scope, the Academy’s attention may lean toward more focused, concise storytelling. This year, the main contenders are “The Brutalist,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” and the still-unreleased “Wicked,” which clocks in at over two and a half hours. Maybe not everything matters in the end.
