“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th Casting Society Artios Awards.
The awards ceremony recognizes the year’s top castings in film, television, and theater. The gala was held in person for the first time in three years in Los Angeles and New York City, with host Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman sharing hosting duties in both cities. A casting director ceremony was also held in London.
With the addition of a new Academy Award in the casting category, the night was certainly a celebration. Starting in 2026, the Best in Casting Award will be presented, the culmination of a decades-long recognition campaign.
Ava DuVernay is this year’s recipient of the Lynne Starmaster Award for Career Achievement. While accepting the award, DuVernay took a moment to thank the Academy governors who advocated for this new Oscar category, saying: “For me and the other directors, the answer was simple: This is going to happen. It’s going to happen, and we yelled at the casting directors to make this happen.”
She then used the rest of her speech to praise Ayesha Corey, the only casting director she has ever worked with. “My passion for the Academy Awards, which recognize casting, is the same passion that drives me for this award I hold. That passion is one of admiration and respect for a woman.” DuVernay said of Corey.
After detailing their collaboration across several films, DuVernay recalled working with Corey on “Origin.” She told Kohli that she wanted only Dalits, also known as untouchables in history, to be played in her films.
“She said, ‘Okay. We’ll talk about that in a moment. Where can I find Dalit actors?’ … Dalit actors are not registered with SAG because Dalits are relegated to the bottom of the caste and do not act. So she had to go to India. She had to scout the Indian diaspora and find out that everyone playing a Dalit in that film was a Dalit. Somehow, she made it happen,” DuVernay said.
